Re: SSD more musical than HDD!

rps20200927_011042.jpg The one thing that surprises me about using the 19 pin USB header on the Gigabyte motherboard is how quiet it is. Some time ago I tested it for use in a NAS to ascertain how many SATA drives I could attach to one Gigabyte board. Having attached the header to SATA SSD and test...

Re: Musical NAS Drives

thats interesting - I remember Charles Hansen from Ayre found really clear words for one of the more known reviewers at Stereophile when this guy was promoting MQA. It was a heated discussion in an open forum and some forum members wondered if Charles wanted to really risk the relation with newspap...

rps20200926_235011.jpg Thanks to Beck for this one, it was in a YouTube clip he posted. I had other albums by Anne Bisson but I missed this. Between here, Twitter musician friends, close friends, my favourite Glasgow music shop and my kid I get a regular supply of new music ideas. You can't have to...

Re: Home Network tweaking (was 'Buy or Rent')

Fredrik, I tried a relatively high cost Synology router. It failed to install an initial upgrade during set up. I wanted it to work - the apps available for it are really useful. But even Amazon directly asking Synology for help failed. It went back. It was replaced by a TP Link Archer VR2800. It wo...

Spannko,

Neighbour noise makes much more sense as a criterion for Linn's move to Eaglesham.

I also find it useful to make a series of clips of the before and after to send to trusted friends to validate (or otherwise) my findings. I retain copies of all the clips I make so I have a historical log if needed in the future.

Nobody wants to be cavalier.

Re: SSD more musical than HDD!

That's a funny name, but it isn't the Tune Method. I have many times stumbled on interesting sounding circuits that seem very rewarding to listen to. Often the listening becomes centered around a particular genre - like how audiophiles often let their systems dictate the record collection - and it ...

I compared nearly all versions on Qobuz. The remastered ones are all worse, the original one is simply the best.

Matt
I have the original still, I'll rip it. Some of the remasters were silly. The session tapes had hiss. Some versions erased the hiss (and more I'm sure).

Re: Quality digital music: Do You Buy or Rent?

I checked it with the original version of Kind of Blue from Miles Davis. With WiFi off both me and my wife found the musicians playing better together and the music made more sense. The sonics did not change. Matt How it should be. The best digital version of that album I've heard is on the two CD ...

Home Network tweaking (was 'Buy or Rent')

Well Spannko, thanks for the encouragement. To make a start. It seems that the noise flowing around a home network does reduce the musicality of streamed music. Not just the path from say your NAS to your streamer, but any noise that flows, say from the internet, your router, or any other appliance...

On evaluation criteria I also use the 06:45 method.
Which just happens to be?
If I'm still listening from well before midnight to 06:30 any change I made exhibits musicality.

Of course it’s a serious question.
Spannko,

I don't know how often you'll ask me the same question when you already know the answer.

Thanks, you have me listening to an often underrated Paul Simon album from 1980. Happy days ;-)

Careful :) I stepped away from vinyl for a few years and thought I'd get back into it - a very good HiFi shop was at the end of my road. Inside a few months I upgraded from a Planar 3 to a 25 and then to the Planar 9 I have now, acquiring an Evans Microgroove with the Planar 9. Enjoy!

Are you testing a 16GB M.2 Optane? Pete, This was the cheapest way to get an idea of what Intel Optane was capable of. There are other relatively affordable ways to use (probably) higher quality versions. This series of Intel Optane has a model number of M10 and NGFF B&M keys. The next series of M2...

Re: SSD more musical than HDD!

Nothing comes close to the Intel series. While I don't entirely distrust the results (I've never tried the Intel disks myself), after all this time, I do wish someone could come up with some sort of explanation for this, or at least a hypothesis. What could it possibly be? Are they unusually well s...

Re: SSD more musical than HDD!

The total cost to install the Intel Optane was less than £30. It could easily be used with a Tinkerboard just via the Orico case which comes supplied with two USB cables, one USB C to USB A and USB C to C.

That's the case. It has a metal heat sink and is small enough to fit inside the PC case with ease.

Re: SSD more musical than HDD!

The adapter solution for the Intel Optane (which is an Orico NVME case with a USB C port) arrived around an hour ago. The only way I could see to use it with a Gigabyte motherboard was via the main motherboard USB header. Several forums indicated it wouldn't work as a boot device except under Window...

Fleet Foxes - Shore. As good as anything they've released and that's an accomplishment of note. Listening to that on Qobuz now, it's very good indeed. I used to own Carole Bayer Sager's first album and played it quite a lot in the late 70's, but it was stolen out of my basement a few years back :-(...
