Re: Cobra Dave’s system

With streaming I got the biggest bang for my cash with the first Hakai. Next (and I was genuinely shocked) was having a separate server - easy with Snakeoil os. I have two Asus Tinkerboard S models. As part of my forthcoming test clips I'll try to use one Tinker Board as a server and the other as a ...

Re: Southern Hemisphere Typical Build - Can We Learn Anything?

Matt,

I read about that beast a while back when I was trying to find further hardware ideas, alternative software and solve what for me is the biggest Hakai puzzle. Unbelievable RAM set up, I'd love to hear it!

Re: Southern Hemisphere Typical Build - Can We Learn Anything?

The Fredrik of the Southern hemisphere builds seems to be Mark Jenkins, owner of Antipodes Audio. I found it interesting how similar yet how different the builds were. They tend to go for less powerful motherboards than we do. They favour cables that are presumably local to them. In some aspects the...

Re: Southern Hemisphere Typical Build - Can We Learn Anything?

Those power filter cards are in most Southern hemisphere builds including the ones highly regarded by Stereophile and made by Antipodes audio.

Southern Hemisphere Typical Build - Can We Learn Anything?

I thought I would post this after reading it on the Snakeoil os site. They have a parallel ITX build in the Southern hemisphere that is pretty consistent with the Hakai approach in most ways. https://www.snakeoil-os.net/wiki/Hardware/building-your-own-mini-itx The main differences are the almost uni...

Re: Debian/MPD: Recent/Latest Versions?

Yes, I played it with the SSD vertical and horizontal and it made no appreciable difference to the sound quality. The only significant sound quality difference I did get was by using very short cables for the SSDs in my Hakai server. But the Streacom case is a tight squeeze for four SSDs (five SSDs ...

Re: Debian/MPD: Recent/Latest Versions?

Both, there's not enough heat generated to affect heat. Neither the mobo or the SSD generate much heat at all. The demands on the CPU of this type of Linux build are light.

Re: Debian/MPD: Recent/Latest Versions?

I don't suppose you, or anyone else, has tried the o/s SSD in both options - vertical to the side of the mobo; horizontal above - to check whether that makes any difference? I tried both in the dedicated player, it made no difference essentially because there's hardly any heat generated with one SS...

Re: Debian/MPD: Recent/Latest Versions?

The latest version of the SnakeOil OS comes with six versions of MPD, each release contains the most recent version plus a few previous versions back to v17.0. What I'm curious about is who tunes MPD and how. I don't believe it's just code playing every codec natively. I posed the question on the MP...

That was my impression too after trying a few different microUSB power supplies. The one that worked best was £1.99 from eBay.

Re: Cables

Have I really managed to find two completely defective USB cables (that would make them my first two, ever), or is there something going on here that I don't understand? As far as I can tell, you can not claim to be a USB cable without supporting power transfer. What are you using to power the Tink...

You've found Snakeoil OS better than VolumIO?
It's a much better sounding piece of software with more options and the ability to support an audio server as well as a dedicated player.
