Re: Playing FLAC
I know what you mean about that. At the Axpona show we had the Källa and a cellular WiFi streamer. We were able to get quite musical sound out of the system on setup day but once the show started we couldn't get it to play without it dropping out regularly. My best guess is that the amount of cellul...

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
A video of an interview with Frank Murray, the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer at Linn in which he explains some of the design ideas behind the LP12-50. I note that the new Linn mantra of "eliminating noise and distortion" is present in this video as it has been in interviews with Gilad. It also exp...

Re: Good sounding vintage gear - examples
Well, Rutger, you are bringing back some memories with that list and it also makes what I was doing in 1984 look pretty good. That year I started my own Hi-Fi store in Encinitas, California with some help from Audiophile Systems (the Linn and Naim importer I worked at as National Sales Manager just ...

Re: Hermanns System
I prefer E on all three of them. I had the hardest time on the 2 clips but even there her voice sounded more natural and things seemed more together. On 1 the whole thing just sounded wrong on D but good on E such that I am still listening to it as I type. On 3/4 I also noticed the overblown sax on ...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
A piece of music that uses detuned instruments, vocals, etc. for effect will have that effect damaged if the system changes the tune. There is no way loss of the quality of being in tune in a system can have anything but a detrimental effect on the music whether it is beautifully melodic or jarringl...

Re: Record player for daughter
Rega supplies the Planar 2 and 1 with a Rega Carbon cartridge which is basically an AT91 and they don't use spacers on those turntables. So I expect that you won't need one putting a 95e on a Planar 3. If you feel that the top of the cartridge is not parallel to the record surface and is tilted down...

Re: Utopik upgrade
+1
Considering that the products that Linn are providing this upgrade for have in some cases been discontinued for over a decade, not to mention that the lasers in disc spinners do wear out over time, it is a bit much to expect Linn to extend a 5 year warranty on the whole machine.

Re: More on source first and other priorities
It just sounds like another misunderstanding of source first. Source first was never meant to be read source only nor to indicate that you can't destroy the musical quality of a system by putting a piece of crap anywhere in the system. It was meant to show that the piece(s) at the beginning of the s...

Re: Record player for daughter
I can listen to and enjoy A, I find B quite odd and hard to listen to. I'm not fond of C either, tune and timing both feeling off. I'd be leery of getting an Axis that doesn't work at 45RPM. Obviously there is a problem in the control/PS board and they are notoriously hard to fix to the point where ...

Re: JBL 308P and 708P
JBL has a series of speakers designed to mimic the look of their older studio series. They are in basic rectangular boxes that are available in dark walnut with a blue front as well as all black. They are all passive two way speakers featuring the newer JBL horn design for the tweeter. The models ar...

Re: Utopik upgrade
Here is a combination of posts I made elsewhere with most of the relevant information. Linn has just officially announced the availability of Utopik for a number of units, some of which rather surprised me. They have also announced a Utopik promotion which runs from November 1 through January 31, 20...

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
I believe the booplinth is cnc routed from a solid block of laminated bamboo yet still has square inside corners. Squaring the corners is a relatively easy task with the right tools. If you look closely at the photos of the Booplinth you will see that the only inside corners that are square are whe...

I can't yet give you a full picture of Superkikkin vs. Sagatun stereo, but I did just get the first shipment of Superkikkin units in a few days ago and my demo version has been in my system since they arrived. I can say that it sounds quite wonderful. A little more info is necessary here. I had a cu...

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
The Keel collar arrangement is a bit of a mystery. I have heard that. as the regular Keel is CNC machined from a solid billet, the arm collar has to have a curve where it meets the flat surface of the armboard. Apparently the design guru insisted that this curve be eliminated and a right-angle subs...

Well, yeah. But Superkikkin isn't quite at Sagatun Mono level from my understanding.macrotech2 wrote: ↑2023-10-14 06:49Possibly 😊 - I’ll be interested to hear your impressions when you get the chance. The improvement for me from Klimax Kontrol to Sagatun Mono was massive.

Re: Superkikkin
Crucify it might be a bit strong. The KK/1 was a very good preamp and one that I happily used for years. When the Sagatuns first came out I would say the SS 1.0 was pretty even with the KK/1 with some things better and others not quite as good. I felt it was more musical overall but it was close as ...

I just finally got around to looking at the Costco Members Only special sale that ends tomorrow. It looks like Walmart and Amazon have lowered their price ...

You are all welcome. They are serial numbered as 1/250 - 250/250. The one I worked on was in the 20s. The other parts of the table all follow normal Linn serial numbering including the LP12-50 specific items: the Keel-50, Radikal-50 and Urika-50. As to a new arm, one never knows. But why after all L...

I just thought I'd chime in on not getting used to how musical and attention-grabbing the system is with the TM3s in place. I just tried port 3 on mine connected to the GS308T and Källa and found it was indeed better, thanks. It had been in port 1 which had already sounded good. I unplugged and replugged the connector into port 1 first to make sure I wasn't comparing a dirty contact to a clean one. Then listened to 1 and...

Interesting! I'll have to try that on my receiver. The sender has all ports used as it is the switch for my MacPro and two printers. However, the fourth port goes over to a Netgear switch and my TV system (with last analog version Majik DSM, AppleTV 4K, Sony 4K BluRay and LG panel) so using port 3 f...

Re: Is there a “best” test track?
Well, I was going to lay off this thread as I'm not fond of the idea of a "best" test track, especially many of the ones I hear used (or was that overused) at Hi-Fi shows. But some interesting thoughts popped up from some of the music mentioned, including a couple of stories. One is about The Roches...
